Extra Income Series: My Journey as a Frequent Flyer Mile Redemption Expert

Hey everyone! Today, I’m excited to share the next edition of my “Extra Income” series. If you’d like to be featured, just send me an email. Previous hustles in this series include running a resume business, helping businesses create online campaigns, and being a creative web entrepreneur.

I specialize in helping people redeem their frequent flyer miles for trips to destinations like Paris and Thailand. Many of my clients either don’t have the time to research their options or aren’t aware of what’s possible with their miles. That’s where my service, iflywithmiles.com, comes in.

**How did you get started with your side hustle?**

I initially registered a domain name because a frequent flyer mile program was offering a promotion where you could earn miles for certain activities, including registering a domain. I didn’t plan on starting a frequent flyer mile redemption service at first. Later, a colleague mentioned he wanted to learn HTML and CSS, so I asked if he’d be interested in creating a website for my new service. He agreed to do it for free.

**What got you interested in this job?**

I have a strong interest and knowledge in miles and points. My engineering mindset makes putting together an itinerary enjoyable rather than daunting. I realized I could offer this service to those who are too busy or don’t want to handle it themselves. Plus, I constantly learn new things about the frequent flyer mile world.

**Tell me more about your services.**

Clients usually contact me with their frequent flyer mile balances, desired travel dates, and destinations. I assess whether their trip is feasible and explain the connections, cabin options, and miles required. Once they understand, I create an itinerary and get their approval before booking. Payment is expected after the booking is confirmed.

**What sets you apart from your competition?**

I have a passion for travel and have often visited the destinations my clients are interested in. My personal travel experience gives me a realistic understanding of connection times and other details.

**What has surprised you most about owning a business?**

I’m surprised at how quickly word spreads through client referrals and how willing past clients are to provide testimonials.

**What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned as a small business owner?**

The biggest lesson is to deliver excellent service to each client. Satisfied clients will refer your service to others. Also, don’t rely solely on SEO for traffic, as Google’s algorithms change frequently.

**What are the start-up costs?**

My start-up costs were very low. I spent $10-$20 on domain registration and used an existing hosting plan from my travel blog. The web design was free, thanks to my colleague.

**What’s the most positive thing about your side job?**

The most rewarding part is knowing I’ve made someone’s trip possible, creating lasting memories and experiences. I also enjoy reading the kind words from past clients when new clients ask for references.

**What are your business goals for the upcoming year?**

My goals for the upcoming year are to maintain positive client relationships and gain new clients through referrals. I also have big travel plans, including driving a car from London to Mongolia.
