Earn Income Online as a Freelance Writer or Virtual Assistant

Hello! Today, I have a super helpful interview to share that will teach you how to make money online as a freelance writer or virtual assistant. My last chat with Caitlin about becoming a freelance proofreader was a hit, so I knew I had to bring you another success story from a different online business field.

Meet my friend Gina. She’s a professional writer and virtual assistant who managed to earn over $4,000 a month within just six months. In our interview, she explains how you can also turn this into a career or a side hustle. If you’re looking for new job opportunities or side hustles, this might be perfect for you.

Check out the interview below for more details on becoming a freelance writer or virtual assistant. Also, Gina offers a free writing course and a free virtual assistant course that you might want to try.

**Background and Journey**

Hi, I’m Gina Horkey. I’m a married millennial mom to two toddlers, aged two and four. My husband stays home with them, which we decided on after realizing the high cost of daycare. I used to be a financial advisor but wasn’t passionate about it, so I started freelance writing on the side while working full-time. This led me to my first virtual assistant gig. With determination, I built my freelance business and went full-time by the end of 2014.

**What is a Freelance Writer?**

A freelance writer is self-employed, offering writing services to various clients. Instead of having one employer, you work with multiple clients. I started with online publications like blog posts and website copy. Some writers also work with print publications and textbooks.

**What Does a Virtual Assistant Do?**

As a virtual assistant, I handle tasks that online business owners don’t have time for, like email management and social media. VAs can also schedule appointments, format blog posts, and more. Clients benefit because they don’t have to provide benefits or pay employment taxes.

**Earnings Potential**

Earnings vary based on experience. New freelance writers might make under $0.10 per word or less than $50 per post but can eventually charge hundreds per article. As a VA, starting rates are around $15-$50 per hour. Knowing your strengths and how to use them in someone’s business can help you charge more.

**What I Love About Freelancing and VA Work**

I love the flexibility and control over my schedule. Writing allows me to express myself, while VA work offers variety and predictable income. I’ve learned a lot from the entrepreneurs I work with, making it a paid learning experience.

**Not Sure If It’s For You?**

Try it anyway. You won’t know unless you give it a shot. If you’re scared, that’s even more reason to start and see if it’s a good fit.

**Startup Costs**

You can start for free. I spent about $200 initially on a URL, hosting, and a job board membership. As long as you have a computer and internet, you’re set. Expenses grow as your business grows, but you can reinvest your profits.

**Freedom and Flexibility**

Freelancing gives you the freedom to make your own decisions. For example, my family and I can travel to Texas for a month this winter while I continue working. This flexibility wouldn’t be possible with a traditional job.

**Final Tips**

Just get started! Don’t wait until you feel ready or have read everything. Learn by doing, and you’ll find it’s the best education.

**Courses**

My courses, “30 Days or Less to Freelance Writing Success” and “30 Days or Less to Virtual Assistant Success,” help you start and grow your freelance business in a month. They cover rates, finding clients, pitching, securing testimonials, and more. Many have launched successful businesses after taking them.
