Curious about active investing strategies?
Over the years, I’ve received many questions about active versus passive investing and how to make money trading stocks. It’s important to note that active investing isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme. Not everyone will succeed with short-term trading, and it’s different from long-term investing. You can lose money, so I recommend doing your own research as there are risks involved. For those interested in long-term investing, I have other resources you might find helpful.
I recently interviewed Teri Ijeoma about active investing. If you’re considering a new career or a side hustle, this might be worth exploring. Teri is highly successful and teaches everyday people how to make $1,000 a day with stocks.
Teri began trading stocks nine years ago to supplement her income. She was so successful that in 2017, she quit her job as an assistant principal to travel and trade full-time. While traveling, she started an online school called Trade and Travel to teach others how to trade stocks.
Teri has a Bachelor’s degree in Management Science from MIT and a Master’s in Media and Communications from Dallas Theological Seminary. She was named 2018 Entrepreneur of the Year by the National Black MBA Association and won Teachable’s 2019 Creator Challenge.
In our interview, Teri answered several questions about active investing, such as:
– How does trading in the stock market work?
– What’s the difference between active and passive investing?
– What are active strategies, and which is better?
– How much time does active investing require?
– Is active investing real or too good to be true?
Here’s a summary of our conversation:
### Teri’s Story
Teri teaches people to actively invest in the stock market to pay off debt, afford travel, and supplement their income. She worked in education for ten years, and after a personal loss, she realized life was too short and needed an exit strategy. She started investing more seriously and eventually made enough to quit her job and travel the world by trading stocks. This led her to create the Trade and Travel course.
### Getting Started
Teri first learned about investing in high school during a summer program at Northwestern University. She was introduced to the stock market and was fascinated. She later attended MIT and interned on Wall Street, which gave her enough knowledge to start investing as a side hustle.
### What She Loves About Trading
Teri loves the flexibility and lifelong skill set that trading offers. She has made significant income while traveling, which allows her to work from anywhere.
### How Trading Works
Trading is simple: open a brokerage account, buy and sell stocks, and follow a strategy. Teri compares it to running a candy stand in high school—buy low, sell high.
### Starting Capital
You don’t need much money to start. Teri’s students can open an account with $500 and practice with fake money. Once ready, she suggests starting with at least $2,000 and aiming to make 1% per day.
### Active vs. Long-Term Investing
Active investing provides immediate income, while long-term investing is more like a savings account for the future. Active investors read stock charts to time their buys and sells, using profits for immediate needs.
### Time Commitment
Initially, learning active investing takes more time, but experienced traders can spend just 30 to 45 minutes a day.
### Making Money
The time it takes to make money varies. Some students start making gains within weeks, while others take longer. Teri recommends practicing for about a year to see consistent returns before trading full-time.
### Financial Goals
Teri recently achieved her goal of making six figures in a day and now focuses on helping her students meet their financial goals. She aims to help 1,000 students make $1,000 a day.
### Advice for Beginners
Teri wishes she had started investing earlier. She emphasizes that trading isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme and requires time, patience, and practice.
### About the Course
Teri’s VIP Trade and Travel course includes seven classes covering everything from stock market basics to advanced strategies. Many students have found success, including one who retired early to care for her family thanks to the income from trading.
